Growing up, my mom used to always make a banana smoothie. She’d have it herself all the time in the morning for breakfast. I can’t remember the first time she made me my own, but it was a staple growing up. The original recipe calls for milk, peanut butter, and didn’t have eggs in it. But here’s the paleo version I make today.
Here you can see Dan downed his about 30 seconds after I gave it to him. No, really. He did. He drinks faster than anyone I know!
Update August 2015: Note that my mom’s original recipe is as follows:
{1 banana + 1 cup milk + 2 tablespoons peanut butter}.
That version is delicious and you can use whatever kind of milk or milk substitute you like!
At other times throughout my life I’ve switched it up by using frozen bananas, adding frozen grapes (freakin’ bomb flavor addition!), and adding more protein like the eggs you see in the paleo-friendly recipe below or protein powder. Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, or unflavored protein are all delicious additions! Lately I’m doing a “PB&J” version that looks like this:
{1/2 large frozen banana + 2 tablespoons peanut butter + 1 cup almond milk + 1 scoop strawberry-banana protein powder}.
More than one way to skin a cat, ya’ll, and more than one way to make a PB banana smoothie. Get crackin’!
- 1 banana, cut into chunks
- 2 tablespoons almond butter
- 2 hard boiled eggs, whites only
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 handful ice cubes
- Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend for about a minute and enjoy!

Do you make your own almond milk or do you use a brand from the grocery? I know when I did whole 30 I just stayed away from it totally because it encouraged you to make your own and I wasn’t ready to do that!

I usually make my own anytime I can. It’s actually quite simple, so you’ll be fine! I’ve been meaning to post that recipe, so I’ll bump it up on the list. Keep your eyes out for it very soon.

interesting recipe. what throws me is the hard-boiled eggs. i have been making something similar as well since i was around 15. strangely i didn’t learn it from anyone. just leave a kid alone in a kitchen and you’d be surprised what we come up with. i remember thinking i wanted something with salt and potassium (electrolytes) and started with peanut butter and bananas. it evolved into a smoothie when i wanted a drink with a decent amount of protein, thus adding the milk and then raw eggs. thats the basis of my recipe. i change it based on what i have available. if i have frozen bananas i can skip the ice. you can sub in part heavy cream, part almond milk to trim some calories. generally its sweet enough, depending on how ripe your bananas are, to make it chocolatey by just adding unsweetened cocoa powder. im always trying to convince myself its a relatively healthy quick and easy meal substitute, though its still pretty high in carbs/calories i think.
